What Is DTF Printing? (And Why It Matters for Your Pet's Hoodie)


If you've ever bought a printed hoodie that cracked after three washes, faded after a season, or felt stiff and plasticky on the chest — the printing method is almost always why.

When you're buying a hoodie for yourself or your pet, the graphic on the front isn't just a design. It's a print that needs to survive real life: washing machines, walks in the rain, a dog who rolls in everything, and years of wear. Not all printing methods are built for that.

Here's a plain-English breakdown of the main printing methods used in custom apparel — what they are, how they hold up, and why it matters when you're choosing a hoodie for your pet or yourself.

What is DTF printing?

DTF stands for Direct to Film. It's one of the newer printing technologies in custom apparel, and it's quickly becoming the preferred method for high-quality printed garments — including pet apparel.

Here's how it works: the design is printed onto a special PET film using DTF inks. An adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink, then cured with heat. The finished transfer is then heat-pressed directly onto the fabric, bonding the design to the fibres at a molecular level.

The result is a print that's vivid, flexible, and built to last.

Why DTF works so well for pet hoodies

Pet hoodies present a specific set of challenges that most printing methods struggle with. The fabric needs to stretch and flex with your pet's movement. It needs to survive frequent washing. And it needs to hold colour through all of it.

DTF handles all three. Because the transfer bonds directly to the fabric rather than sitting on top of it, the print moves with the garment instead of cracking under pressure. It works on polyester, cotton, blends, and mixed fabrics equally well — which matters because pet hoodies are typically made from polyester, not cotton.

DTG printing — Direct to Garment

DTG produces exceptional detail and colour accuracy — it handles complex multi-colour designs and photographic-quality graphics better than almost any other method. The print feels soft to the touch because the ink becomes part of the fabric rather than sitting on top of it.

The catch: DTG works best on 100% cotton or high-cotton-content fabrics. On polyester or blended synthetic fabrics, the ink doesn't absorb the same way and the print quality drops significantly.

The limitations are real though: setup costs make it impractical for small runs, it doesn't handle photographic or highly detailed designs well, and it's not suited to all-over patterns that cover the entire garment. For a print-on-demand brand making individual hoodies to order, screen printing simply isn't the right tool.

AOP — All Over Print

AOP (All Over Print) is the method used to cover an entire garment — not just a chest placement or a back graphic, but every panel of the fabric from collar to cuffs.

The most common AOP method for polyester garments is dye sublimation, where heat converts ink into gas, which then bonds permanently with the polyester fibres. The result is a print that's genuinely part of the fabric — it can't crack or peel because it's not a layer on top. It's in the fibre itself.

AOP requires polyester (or a very high polyester content) to work correctly. On cotton, the ink doesn't bond the same way and the colours appear washed out. This is why AOP and DTG are essentially complementary methods — each is best suited to a different fabric type.

Is it a placement print or all-over?

A placement print is a single graphic on the chest or back. An all-over print covers the full garment. Both can be done well — but an all-over print on a pet hoodie requires AOP dye sublimation on polyester to hold up. If a brand is selling "all-over print" pet hoodies but can't tell you the fabric content, that's a flag.

How does it wash?

A properly applied DTG, DTF, or AOP print should survive repeated machine washing without cracking, fading, or peeling. If a brand recommends hand-wash only for a printed hoodie, the print quality is likely the reason.

  • Human hoodie (DTG on cotton blend): machine wash cold, inside out, tumble dry low. Avoid bleach and fabric softener — both break down the ink over time.
  • Pet hoodie (AOP on polyester): hand wash cold, air dry. Polyester is heat-sensitive — high dryer heat can cause the fabric to pill and the print to dull over time.
  • Both: wash inside out where possible — friction against other garments is the main cause of surface wear on printed fabrics.

The bottom line

The printing method isn't the most exciting thing to think about when you're buying a hoodie. But it's the difference between a graphic that lasts for years and one that starts cracking by winter.
